ISRO Positions Space as a Key Driver for Future Defence Operations

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is intensifying its focus on developing technologies and applications tailored for the defence sector, highlighting space as a critical factor in future warfare.

ISRO Chairman Dr. V Narayanan stated that the organisation has established a comprehensive roadmap to guide defence-focused space initiatives, reflecting the strategic importance of satellites and related technologies for national security. He stressed that communication, navigation, and earth observation satellites are essential for effective military operations, and their continuous availability is vital for the safety of the nation.

Speaking at the India International Science Festival in Panchkula, Dr. Narayanan noted that while sensitive details cannot be publicly disclosed, ISRO is advancing multiple projects to strengthen national security. Currently, India operates 57 satellites, with plans to triple this number, underscoring the organisation’s rapid expansion of space capabilities.

ISRO is also developing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence-driven systems, advanced propulsion methods, inertial navigation technologies, and new satellite payloads tailored specifically for defence and security applications. These capabilities enhance intelligence, reconnaissance, communication, and operational planning for both civilian and military purposes.

The organisation manages around 50 active space applications, including earth observation, satellite communications, navigation, disaster warning, and weather forecasting. These platforms contribute directly to public safety while supporting military readiness.

Dr. Narayanan highlighted the performance of ISRO satellites during recent military exercises like Operation Sindoor, where their reliability and technological sophistication proved critical. He also noted significant advancements in satellite imaging, with resolution improving from one kilometre in early programmes to just 28 centimetres today, greatly enhancing reconnaissance and intelligence capabilities.

In addition, ISRO is investing in innovative propulsion technologies, including electric and nuclear propulsion, which will increase satellite efficiency, endurance, and operational flexibility in defence applications.

With an expanding satellite constellation, AI-powered systems, advanced imaging, and next-generation propulsion technologies, ISRO is positioning India to leverage space as a central element of national defence strategy. These initiatives ensure that space will play a transformative role in future warfare, strengthening the country’s overall security architecture.
